It all adds up to something not altogether different from Lifetime's ripped-from-the-headlines 2019 movie. DALLAS Actor Ron Lester, who was perhaps best known playing the loud, oversized lineman Billy Bob in the 1999 film Varsity Blues, has died of organ. The excruciatingly boring and undeniably cheesy film (now streaming, ★ out of four) relies on hokey dramatic re-creations and blaring headlines to come up with two hours' worth of material. The film helped launch the careers of many notable actors and actresses, including James Van Der Beek, Ali Larter, Scott Caan, Amy Smart, the late Paul Walker and the late Ron Lester. That's all there is to the scandal, and yet a new Netflix documentary, "Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal" tries to find a new spin on an old story. 'Varsity Blues,' the classic film about a high school football team in a small town in Texas, turns 20 years old today. Many of the defendants, including actors Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, served prison time. There were fake athletic photo shoots, cheating incidents on standardized tests, and bribes offered to coaches and administrators. Heather Graham was cast as the hottie on eight wheels Rollergirl in Paul Thomas Andersons iconic period piece 'Boogie Nights. Starting in 2011, wealthy parents, CEOs and a few well-known actresses paid a grifter hundreds of thousands of dollars to "side door" their kids into the country's elite universities. 'It was an honor to be part of the cast of Varsity Blues and co-star with Paul,' says Eliel. There's not much to say about the college admissions scandal that hasn't already been said. Eliel Swinton, who played Wendell Brown ( left ), echoed Lester's sentiments.
